The latest album, ‘Mystic Highway Road Trip’ by DownTown Mystic, is everything we needed to make our day. It’s a nostalgic ride with a forward rush of excellence.
“Superstar (To Sir Elton With Love Mix)” starts this all off with a fire that encapsulates the sound of Elton John in a way no one else has been able to accomplish. Not since EJ has there been another, and thank God DownTown Mystic is fearless enough and knows how amazing and important it is to take an “Island Girl” out on a “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”!
“Superstar (To Sir Elton With Love Mix)” bursts right out of the gate with grinding melodic guitar, and the beat pattern is instantly memorable. It gets stuck in your head like a true classic hit does. DownTown Mystic has been making music for a long time and knows how to construct and craft a hit, and this is one I couldn’t get enough of.
Next comes the carefully constructed lyrical pattern and delivery. The opening phrasing creates that mind-moment connection. You’re out, you don’t want to go home, and the concert doors are closed. Now DownTown Mystic has my attention. Then the lyrics explode alongside the melody, where the pacing feels like it has doubled and the instruments are all battling for their moment in a way that feels like one long solo for each of them.
It’s impossible to imagine how DownTown Mystic has harnessed lightning in a bottle with this record, but he has. The orchestral, blazing-fast explosiveness makes you feel like we accelerated from 0 to 90 mph.
Inside all of this is the head-bopping bass and driving, intricate drum fills, with the guitars shooting notes around like lasers. With this display, they push the vocals to a new height that makes you sing, no, scream along. Allen takes “Superstar (To Sir Elton With Love Mix)” to a level we could never have believed possible and still cannot believe could be achieved.
Soaring highs and barreling runs arrive with a chorus that might make you fight, but only in a gentlemanly way. You know, the kind where you make up, buy the winner a beer, and promise to meet back next week. It’s a glorious style of music that brings out the best of the worst in us. But then again, what else are you going to do on a Saturday night?!
What we already loved, and love once again, is that DownTown Mystic has created and revived this sound. His unique style and delivery make it his own while still feeling like the sound we hope never, ever leaves.
“Live” brings bass, cowbell, and some truly exceptional additional instrumental elements that combine the best of the ’70s and ’80s, which is considered sacred in some circles. Robert Allen’s long, slow, bluesy delivery allows the instruments to become the duets instead of another singer.
It’s a method where each moment is played in the spirit the artists envisioned, never cut and pasted in post. The long harmonica wails seem to complement and upstage the guitar, only for the guitar to surpass them, followed by every other instrument, to the absolute epic and euphoric astonishment of the listeners.
The unending talent and passion they possess is a wonder to explore and consume. There is no better feeling than the one this song, “Live,” left with us. It could best be described as a best-of homage to entire decades of music and culture, and it’s beautiful.

“Somebody’s Always Doin Something to Somebody - Uncut Mix” is an organ and synth lover’s dream. The organ’s influence stretches from our childhood memories of the circus, to The Doors, and every other type of music, and here it is on display in all its harmonic brilliance.
The gang-style vocal delivery in the chorus gives it a grandiose style that only rock and roll can deliver. The guitars also really shine here, while the drums smash and create a magnificent send-off to this exceptional album.
