We had never heard Rosetta West before, but once we dove in headfirst and got a taste of their song double single "Snake 25," we couldn’t wait to share our excitement with you.
The opening of "Snake 25" features a gentle yet hypnotic chord progression, setting the perfect tone for the vocals to enter. When they do, the delivery is both throaty and velvety, an intoxicating contrast that immediately grabs attention. As the guitar continues in the background, it creates a mesmerizing atmosphere, drawing the listener deeper into the vocals and their message. Utilizing an impressive production technique, the tonal shifts within the notes build an underlying intensity. This is when the vocalist transitions their delivery, creating a euphoric sensation that harnesses the listener.
A standout lyrical moment captures an undeniable emotional weight:
"Whisky birds / down we’ll turn / God bless the insane / and I love you so, but I can’t let go"
The vocal delivery cascades with an emotional force, evoking the sensation of a waterfall rushing down a mountainside. The pacing is so gripping that it instantly converts the listener into a fan of this unique style. The interplay of intricate guitar licks and runs enhances this effect, making the music feel seamlessly intertwined with the lyrics. This cohesion between sound and storytelling is technical precision turned into an exhilarating auditory experience. As the song progresses, it starts to feel like an otherworldly force, completely captivating and immersive. We found ourselves rewinding certain sections repeatedly just to relive the thrill.
As "Snake 25" seems to fade into a lull, it suddenly takes a dramatic and dynamic turn. The guitar swells into a powerful, boisterous force, accompanied by a driving beat that creates a sensation of acceleration. At this moment, the vocalist’s delivery becomes even more emphatic, intensifying the emotional resonance. Rapid vocal runs and dramatic drum fills rise and fall, heightening the experience. The vocal styling takes on a raspier edge before seamlessly transitioning into sustained belts that showcase remarkable technical ability.
Another striking lyric stands out:
"Wish you had a will to fight."
This line, paired with an electrifying arrangement, transforms into a galloping rhythm that makes you feel as though you’re riding a stallion at full tilt, adrenaline surging. The entire track ignites a fight-or-flight response, thrilling the senses in a way few songs achieve. As it surges forward, an intricate and blistering guitar solo emerges, gritty yet controlled, exuding pure rock ‘n’ roll energy. The bass lays a deep, thunderous foundation, seamlessly transitioning between heavy strums and flowing, sustained notes that rumble throughout. Just past the four-minute mark, the track reaches a controlled chaos where every band member delivers an explosive, emotionally charged performance. The clarity in the production is so refined that listeners can isolate each instrument while still enjoying the full, cohesive sound. This is what makes "Snake 25" such a thrilling listen, each element shines individually while contributing to a seamless, exhilarating whole.
As the song returns to its rhythmic gallop, the bass takes the lead, driving the momentum toward a pedal-to-the-metal rush to the finish line. A sustained note, punctuated by a dramatic drum fill, brings everything to an electrifying close. This moment of the song was pure perfection, balancing technical complexity with an intuitive, rhythmic allure that resonates deeply.
The finale is nothing short of epic, with the closing guitars delivering sheer euphoria. Not since Iron Maiden’s "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" have we encountered a track that masterfully balances explosive energy with moments of restrained simplicity, creating a full-circle experience in technical precision and evocative storytelling.
We also had the chance to check out "Oh Mary," the other track of this double single, which offered a beautifully eccentric beat pattern, layered with multi-tracked guitars reminiscent of Zeppelin’s free-form folk stylings. It’s not often you can make a comparison to rock gods like this. The vocals carried a rich emotional texture, and the ending was delicate and hauntingly beautiful. The work on this recording is just outstanding.
