With a vocal sound that’s the most unique we’ve heard in decades, the magnetic and exciting tone combined with his intriguing lyrics make Paul Dunne someone who will become your next favorite artist, just as he has become ours. We checked out his latest album release, Garden Snake Coffee Brain, and it is a truly excellent performance.
Track one, “Saying Goodbye,” starts off gently, with a soft guitar movement that flows effortlessly, then wastes no time transforming into a growling, and simultaneously glowing vocal performance that rises in the background of this song before you know it. Almost surreptitiously, it converts into an emotional, declarative unraveling of frustration and unloading of thought. With all of this, because of Paul Dunne’s incredible mannerisms, which you can really see and feel, it becomes something you can’t turn off and instead fixate on so earnestly. The drums feel like a controlled explosion, with the guitars wailing in the background like a sadness we can all feel. Then Paul Dunne brings it all back down. He once again becomes the central character and the final thing you hear, and it’s absolute perfection.
Next up was “My Alien Drank All the Beer.” It’s impossible to pass up a song with that name, and the screaming from both Paul Dunne’s vocals and the guitars brought a heat that will actually bring you to a halt and make you absorb every second of this song. The rumbling, four-on-the-floor delivery was a perfect combination. The beat kept the flow and cadence, and the guitars felt like they had no boundaries. It was absolutely magical.
“Paper” has a much more rhythmic opening combined with the musings of Paul Dunne. While revealing he feels he’s sabotaged his life, the song’s dragging and erratic tempo halfway through contradicts its earlier feel, and this track perfectly embodies the artist. It’s steady, then it crashes off the rails, and the explosive result is something you realize is the most satisfying feeling you could ask for.
We loved the freedom and unleashed expression, both vocally and instrumentally, from Paul Dunne. It feels like it’s being written and created right before your very eyes, and that’s what makes it feel so original.
