Begin Interview:

Hello Nik&Blu, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.

Q. We were blown away by “When The Night Is Over.” The opening is so overwhelming in the best way, and when your vocals enter, it’s just magic. When did each of you first discover your talents, and what moment in your life shifted it from being something personal and intimate to recording with the intention of sharing it with a worldwide audience, setting the stage for the powerful and viable career we’re witnessing now?

A. Blue: I started playing piano when I was 7and guitar when I was 14. I have always been able to quickly learn new instruments and melodies. When I started writing music together with Nik, it felt like both of us could use our own talents without stepping on each other's toes too much. However, it has been several years of trial and error to come to this point when we finally have found our own sound and want to start sharing our music with everyone.

Nik: I started playing guitar when I was 13 years old and immediately started writing songs together with my friends. We had a band that played 70s and 80s style heavy rock and I was developing my song writing and recording skills during that time.

Q. "When The Night Is Over" is such a high-energy track with a jazzy vibe. How did your influences from French-style jazz artists like Zaz and Jill Barber help shape the final sound of the song?

A. These artists gave a lot of ideas and inspiration for the lead vocals as well for the general mood for the song.

Q. As a teaser description, what would you tell someone about this song to intrigue them about its meaning if you only had one sentence to get them interested in listening to it?

A. A smoky jazz club and a wild woman looking for a party and someone to party with until the first rays of morning sneak in.

Q. This song is part of your debut album. What can listeners expect from the rest of the album? Will it have the same jazzy, energetic vibe, or will there be other genres?

A. There definitely will be jazz vibes but we like to mix genres depending on the story and atmosphere of the song.

Q. You’ve worked on "When The Night Is Over" over the years. How did your vision for the track evolve over time, and what was the moment you felt like you finally nailed it?

A. We always had a vision of what the song should sound like but sometimes it takes a long time to really capture the essence. We put a lot of focus on fine tuning the lead vocals and did some changes to the melody to allow more interesting and dramatic story telling.

Q. How does the energy of a song like “When The Night Is Over” translate into the live experience? Are there any special elements you’re excited to bring to the stage when you perform it?

A. That is a very good question. At the moment there are just the two of us, and our usual setup is ukulele and guitar or two guitars. The live version will be different to the recording but the same exploding energy will definitely be present.

Q. The track has an infectious groove. How did the process and inspiration for the track unravel and did it take any other shapes before you landed on this?

A. Everything started with the piano riff which set the mood for everything. After that it was relatively easy to start adding other instruments. The acoustic guitar was the last addition and we really felt like it was the final missing element in the crazy groove we were looking for.

Q. You’re creating your debut album. Was there any pressure or sense of excitement to ensure this first single captured the essence of who you are as artists and set the tone for the rest of your music?

A. We wanted to release something that would leave no questioning of what we are capable of. However, we like to combine different genres depending on a song, this song is just one of many different worlds and stories we want to tell to the audience.

Q. As a duo, how do you balance your creative input and ideas?

A. We are both really creative and in the studio we try to always welcome almost all the ideas, who knows if something that first sounds a bit silly might take the song to the next level. Nik is more in charge of writing the lyrics as he really has a talent and a calling for it. Blu is a multi-instrumentalist and she loves to improvise and explore different soundscapes.

Q. You’ve worked on this song for a long time, and it’s finally ready to be released. How does it feel to finally share this piece of your journey with the world, and what do you hope listeners will take away from it?

A. It certainly feels great to finally release this song and share this story. This song is not to be taken too seriously and we hope the listeners have fun and maybe want to get up and dance.

Q. How did the process and inspiration for “When The Night Is Over” evolve, and did the song take any other forms before you landed on this final version?

A. The core of the song has been the same since the beginning, however, the final version evolved now in the past year when Blu started acting in a community theatre and got new ideas and inspiration for developing a character for the song. The lead vocals came together quite nicely after this female character was created.

Q. Where does the magic of your music production begin? Do you kick things off in your home studio, or do you team up with an outside producer? And when it’s time to wrap things up, do you handle the mixing and mastering yourself, or bring in someone to help perfect it?

A. At the moment we create everything in our home studio but we do send our songs for mixing and mastering.

Q. What do you want people to remember most about you after hearing this song and reading this interview?

A. That we really love what we do, everything in our music is done with careful consideration. We want to tell stories and take people to another world for a while.

Q. Outside of music, who or what has had the biggest influence on your personal growth or artistic perspective?

A. For the past seven years we have been living around Europe in different countries and we have been surrounded by different cultural influences. That has definitely impacted our view of the world and personal growth.

Q. We’d love to dive deeper into the story behind your artist name, ‘Nik&Blu.’ Now that we’ve had a chance to experience your music, it’s clear that your fans will be equally curious about the meaning behind the name that accompanies your sound. How does ‘Nik&Blu’ connect to the music you create, what significance does it hold for you personally, and what is the origin or backstory behind the name?

A. Nik&Blu is in a way a combination of our names. Nik - Niklas and Blu - Sini (Sini means the colour blue in Finnish. Yes, we are originally from Finland.) We wanted to have an artist name that is not too complicated and doesn’t immediately categorise us to a certain genre. We gave this quite a lot of thought and had different names in mind but we wanted to go with Nik&Blu, kind of like Simon and Garfunkel.

Q. You’re in the midst of releasing your debut album. After so much anticipation, what’s next for you both after the album drops? Are there any surprises or future projects you're already working on that you can tease?

A. We have created so much music but not properly recorded or released. Most likely we will move on to the next album, which we are already planning and discussing. Blu is also writing music for a couple of theatre plays which is going to be another new and exciting experience.

Nik&Blu, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
