We jumped right into the title track, "5...4...3...2...1...," and immediately the lyric video captivated us. Zachary Mason's incredible lyrical prowess is what draws you in early on. His in-depth, thought-provoking style makes his music feel like much more than just a listen; it’s a soundscape, a fusion of music and message. The track already carries the essence of early Pink Floyd, with glowing resonant guitars that feel like a contemporary reinvention of classic rock sounds. The escalating and cascading notes create a progressive soundscape that feels like an entirely new evolution of sonic possibilities. This track is proof of Mason’s creative range, not only deep but entirely unique. We were particularly taken with the layers of bass and the gritty rhythm that fuel the tune, giving it a raw energy that’s impossible to ignore.

Mason’s choice of vocal presentation, with its ethereal, halo-like glow, was absolute perfection. It’s a brilliant balance to the guitars, adding an atmospheric weight that elevates the entire experience. As we continued to sink deeper into the track, there were even subtle hints of Peter Frampton’s influence, but with a signature twist only Mason could deliver.

The message of the song, depicting humans' desire to flee earth as we have made it a sprawling trash dump, is both captivating and brilliantly executed. It’s so hypnotic and immersive that we dare you to try and turn it off. The track doesn’t just play, it pulls you in with a gravitational force, impossible to resist once the hypnosis takes hold.

The vocals never waver, staying high in the mix like an eye in the sky, delivering the sense that Mason has become an all-powerful being sent here with a message. The performance is nothing short of stunning, a testament to Mason’s ever-growing legacy of musical greatness.

And then, the song’s ending, a masterful deconstruction of the instruments, takes things to another level. As the track falls apart, it feels like a rocket shedding its stages and soaring forward, disappearing into the ether. It’s a moment that rewards close listening, offering multiple layers of engagement. You can choose to simply enjoy it, let the music wash over you. Or, you can dive deep into the lyrics, unpacking the profound message behind the performance. For those who want a truly immersive experience, you can explore Mason’s thoughts and ideas, finding yourself entranced in his profound depths. It’s a kind of musical experience that’s almost drug-like in its allure.

Next, we dive into “The Funky Martians.” If you’re seeking the fearless artist of our generation, look no further. Zachary Mason refuses to be confined by any boundaries, effortlessly dropping chords and vocals that float and stick in your mind. The vocal delivery here is where Mason truly shines, a complete triumph. It’s fresh, it’s unique, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. As always, the guitar work is meticulously crafted, offering intricate layers that elevate the track to new heights.

Finally, we move on to “Earthsick,” which begins with a slow burn and delivers the perfect track for introspection. This is the kind of song you’d put on when you’re looking to chill and reflect. Mason’s manipulative technique here feels refreshingly innovative, with intentionally slow and deliberate lyrics that hang in the air, compelling you to hang on to every word.

Be warned, Zachary Mason’s music is an addictive force. Once you let it into your soul, it’s hard to break free.

We’ve always recognized Mason’s genius, and we’re confident that once you experience it for yourself, you’ll agree.

Zachary Mason’s journey began in 2021, when he started creating music on a recording kit gifted to him by a relative. Since then, he’s built a reputation for his innovative approach to blending genres, from Space Rock to Psychedelic and Experimental. '5...4...3...2...1...' is his first EP, and it tells a captivating story of humanity's desperate flight from a decaying Earth and their attempts to colonize Mars. Each track of the EP unfolds a new chapter in this epic narrative, full of humor, quirkiness, and moments of introspection.

The title track, "5...4...3...2...1...", sets the scene with humanity fleeing Earth, their planet crippled by climate change and recklessness. As the story progresses, “The Funky Martians” introduces a fresh twist, depicting humans landing on Mars to establish a new colony, only to encounter hostile Martians threatening to derail their plans. A lucky mistake, however, leads to a remarkable resolution. Finally, “Earthsick” closes the EP with a poignant reflection on humanity's disillusionment with their new home on Mars, regretting the loss of Earth and the impact of their past actions.

Throughout the EP, Zachary is joined by some incredible collaborators. Nate Barnes, drummer for the critically acclaimed rock band Rose Hill Drive, provides the driving rhythms on all tracks, while John Thomasson of Little Big Town plays bass on the first two songs. For the final track, Zachary himself steps in to play bass, marking the first time he’s ever done so in his released material.

The EP was mixed and mastered by Derrick Lin, a talented musician and producer based in Hong Kong, who also founded the band Voyage In Solitude.
