Vølve’s "Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser" is a breathtaking journey through myth and emotion, powerful and profound.

In a world where the ancient and modern collide, Vølve emerges with her haunting new single, "Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser." Drawing from the depths of Nordic mythology and personal reflection, this cinematic dark folk piece pulls listeners into a realm where grief, power, and prophecy intertwine. The song’s ethereal textures and sweeping violins blend with thundering drum beats, creating a sound that feels otherworldly, yet deeply human.

We spoke with the artist behind this captivating track, delving into the forces that shaped her unique sound. As a master of combining ancient myths with contemporary emotion, Vølve channels the spirit of the seeress, a figure from Norse tradition, and transforms personal hardship into music that resonates with strength and mystery.

In this interview, Vølve takes us through the creative process behind "Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser," revealing what it was about this song's title and its themes that compelled her. We explore her connection to the archetype of the vølva, a mystical figure able to see beyond the veil, and how this powerful imagery found its way into the song's soul-stirring composition. The conversation touches on the ritualistic energy behind her B-side track,

"Varðlokkur," and how she brings ancient traditions into her modern music.

Her sound, a rich blend of cinematic, ethereal elements and folk tradition, invites listeners into an emotional landscape where feminine power and resilience are more urgent than ever.

Here’s how it went:

Begin Interview:

Hello Vølve, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.

Q. We absolutely loved “Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser.” The slow-burn introduction, followed by the powerful bellowing drumbeat, felt otherworldly. And then when your vocals entered, it was like magic. They float almost like clouds in the sky, yet move like the wind. Combined with the strings, it was absolutely mesmerizing. How has your personal musical journey brought you to this point? Did your evolution into a professional career happen gradually, or was there a pivotal moment or event that set everything in motion?

A. Thank you so much for listening so deeply. My journey has been long and not linear. I was part of a band for many years, but I left because I felt my voice and vision were being reduced. Being the only woman in the band sometimes came with unspoken expectations of how I “should” behave - more ladylike than I actually am, haha. Stepping out alone as VØLVE was both terrifying and liberating. The pivotal moment was realizing that I didn’t just want to make songs - I wanted to create music as rituals. That changed everything.

Q. “Vølvens Sang / Jeg Ser” feels like stepping into a world of myth and mystery. Can you share the full story behind why you created this song, and what made you choose this specific title?

A. I wrote the song during long nights in the hospital after my son suffered a spinal cord injury. I was by his bedside, living in fear and exhaustion, when this vision-song came to me. The title means “I See” - because it’s sung from the perspective of the Völva, the Norse seeress, who sees both destruction and renewal. For me, it became about not looking away. About facing unbearable grief, and still daring to give it a voice.

Q. We’ve read about the seeress in Norse mythology and how she’s able to see beyond the veil. What was it about this particular archetype that resonated with you during the creation of this song?

A. The Völva archetype is about vision and voice. She’s feared and revered because she dares to speak the truth even when people don’t want to hear it. That resonates deeply with me - both as a woman and as an artist. Claiming that voice has been my way of surviving, healing, and transforming silence into power.

Q. There’s this beautiful tension between the dark folk elements and the ethereal atmosphere in your music. How do you approach weaving together these layers? Do you ever feel like you’re channeling something ancient when you sit at the piano or pick up the cello?

A. Yes - it feels like channeling. My background as a classical organist and my love for cinematic sound design both live inside me, so I let them collide. The dark folk elements ground me in earth and body; the ethereal textures feel like breath and spirit. Together they create a tension that feels alive - like calling in something ancient but speaking it in my own language. Performing live is especially magical. I feel the channeling more strongly there. I’ve been going through a vulnerable life phase, and the Vølve is an archtype with room for all my mixed emotions and big feelings. I don’t try to hide it. I just carry it into the music, wearing it alongside my Vølve makeup - visible, raw, and un-pretty.

Q. “Varðlokkur” brings a whole new dimension to your project with its ritualistic, almost hypnotic vibe. Could you walk us through the ritual behind it? What was the intent, and what kind of emotional or spiritual space were you hoping to create with that piece?

A. Varðlokkur means “spirit-call” in Old Norse. It was used in ancient seiðr rituals to summon helping spirits. My version is a modern vardlokkur - repetitive, hypnotic, sung in Old Norse, built to open a trance-like space. In the song I call in the Vølve herself as well as the four elements. The intent was both personal and collective: to call in strength, protection, and presence. It’s not just a performance piece - it’s a ritual song I actually use in ceremonies with my coven.

Q. The themes of feminine power and resilience are central to your music. Do you think these kinds of stories are more urgent now than ever before? How do you feel this shapes the way your music speaks to the world?

A. Yes, more urgent than ever. We live in a world where patriarchal systems are collapsing, yet clinging harder than before. Singing about feminine power isn’t just aesthetics - it’s resistance. Just as being a witch is resistance - my form of rebellion. I want to create a sound universe where softness and rage, vulnerability and power co-exist. For me, feminine energy and deep feelings like sorrow, love, and grief are not signs of fragility - they’re transformative forces.

Q. Listening to your music feels like stepping into another dimension. When you imagine your listeners immersing themselves in your sonic world, what do you hope they experience? Is it a transformation, an awakening, or something else entirely?

A. I hope they feel less alone. I hope they feel recognized - even in moments of heaviness, restlessness, or heartbreak. If a spark of transformation rises from that, even better. At its core, I want to create spaces where people can breathe, release, and remember their own strength. And if some feel compelled to use my music in their own magic moments - which can be all from casting spells to dancing barefoot in the kitchen, kissing under the stars, or anything else that feels alive - all the better!

Q. Have there been moments when you questioned continuing with music? What helped you stay committed to your creative path?

A. Many times. Especially as a mother of a child with a disability, I often felt like my dreams had to be shelved. And in the music industry, I’ve felt invisible because of age and gender. What kept me going was the truth that music is not just what I do - it’s who I am. Even when I tried to stop, the songs came anyway. So I keep following them.

Q. Vølve, thank you so much for sharing these intimate details! What’s next for you? Can you give us a sneak peek into your upcoming projects and let your fans know what they should be most excited about?

A. I’m working on a full-length ritual concert, structured like a ceremony with opening, invocation, energy-raising, and closing. I’m also writing new songs that explore both Norse myth and my own lived experiences. The vision is to create concerts that feel like sacred spaces - not just shows, but moments of transformation.
