Here’s how it went:

Begin Interview:

Hello The Fever Dreams, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.

Q. Can you introduce the members of The Fever Dreams and share how each person’s unique strengths and creative roles contribute to the band’s sound and identity?

A. Our main visionary and lead guitar hero is “Duke” (Samuel James Duke) – he brings vast amounts of creativity and musical directorship to the band, along with his free-living attitude to life and his tattoo artist vibes make him one hell of a character. Duke also designs and creates all the hand-made artwork for the releases.

Frontman, Kieron Cox co-founded The Fever Dreams with Duke back in 2023. Kieron has been a full-time singer and musician all of his adult life, with 8 years experience performing with Royal Caribbean International, he brings a natural and electric frontman energy to live shows. Kieron co-writes the songs, finding intriguing but catchy melodies that guarantee to get stuck in your head.

On rhythm guitar, we have the most music-obsessed man around, Sam McDaniel. Originally one of Duke’s tattoo clients, “Maccers” never stops playing his guitar or writing songs, he is relentless. He brings a calmness to proceedings, along with his rich low singing voice, he compliments Duke’s lead guitar and Kieron’s vocals perfectly.

Chris John Davis holds the bass line, whilst keeping the band laughing constantly. In writing, he brings unique character to the low end of the music, whilst his poetry and lyrics are something to behold. He’s cheeky chappy on stage, with a heart of gold off stage.

The real wild child of the group is Jake Morter on the drums. Rarely will he have more than one item of clothing left during a live show. Jake’s outlandish style might surprise you when you find out he is actually choir trained and has 20 years of professional drumming experience. Jake brings those backing vocals you can only dream of stumbling upon.

Q. What drew you to cover the song “Take Your Mama,” by The Scissor Sisters?

A. We just love the song! Undiscussed, Kieron had been covering the song for over ten years, and Duke had always had a love for the track. When it came to the rest of the band, we found so much space for additional guitar work and vocal harmonies that we just wanted to make it really rock out!

Q. Are cover songs a go-to approach for you when making music, or is this your first time taking on a cover?

A. We are predominantly focused on releasing our own original music, but to be funding recording sessions, we have taken on a good chunk of covers gigs. This song just stood out to us as one that would be great fun to record and release, prior to other original work coming out over the few months.

Q. In your press release, you describe your music as having a “bouncy rock vibe.” Would you say that energy reflects your band's collective personality and mission? Has this particular style always been part of your journey, or has it evolved over time through experimentation with different influences or genres?

A. This definitely encapsulates the band’s energy! Our motto is to “have a good time… all the time!” We just want to keep music simple and fun, using our individual classic rock influences to create music that whilst it’s new, we know it works. Most importantly, we want it sounding how it would live! It’s rock music – we’re performers – and nothing in the world is a better experience than experiencing live music come to life on stage.

Q. You mentioned that during your first songwriting session with Duke, “something clicked.” What was it about that initial collaboration that felt so electric, and what surprised you most about your creative synergy?

A. We just had a natural ability to be completely honest with each other, and this helped us realise we filled the other partner’s weaknesses when they arose. Not only in writing, but in life we have built a solid lifelong friendship around this ethos. Once the fundamentals of the first song were finished, we then went back and pushed the other even further to get the absolute best out of the other. Kieron has the ability to translate what Duke’s mind envisions and Duke has the ability to tweak Kieron’s lyrics and melody lines into musical and lyrical hooks. It just works.

Q. Your version of “Take Your Mama” is packed with a playful energy, especially with the added guitar solos and vocal harmonies. Was there a particular challenge in reimagining the song, or did it come together more naturally?

A. It was completely natural. We’d go as far as to say the first time we ran through the song probably wasn’t far from this version at all! There was space for creativity, but we didn’t want to overthink any of what was coming to us naturally. We just took an exceptional song, and put our individual rock tastes into it.

Q. Recording in a home studio in the New Forest must have been a unique experience. How did the atmosphere there influence the evolution of the song in terms of sound and vibe?

A. We became very focused on the process. The studio is outstanding, and built inside an old barn. We’d walk from the farmyard carpark past a tractor, some bikes, horse equipment, and then open a white door into this other musical world.

Q. With your commitment to releasing original songs every month, how do you maintain creative momentum? How does this regular release cycle challenge you as artists, and how do you keep things fresh?

A. We already have a catalogue of songs that are either in the recording process or ready to be recorded. On top of this, we have weekly writing sessions to keep the better stuff flowing through. The main challenge is funding the recording sessions, so we have been personally investing into the band but also doing various covers gigs to pay for studio time. And why not?! They’re great fun, more gigging experience and always picking up new fans!

Q. You’ve mentioned wanting to bring back the “good old classic rock and roll.” What specific elements of classic rock do you feel are more needed in today’s music scene, and how do you aim to fill that gap with your sound?

A. The live performance aspect, more than anything. The atmosphere it brings to a crowd, the guitar solos, the natural energetic performances. Just the rawness and excitement in watching five best mates put on a great show for anyone and everyone to enjoy.

Q. Given that you all come from different musical backgrounds, what’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about each other through your journey in The Fever Dreams?

A. How to deal with the different personality types. And we do this with pure love and lots of humour. We continue to learn how to understand what each of us needs and how they work. Most importantly, we put friendship and enjoyment over anything else – what’s the point in doing this if we can’t enjoy each other’s company?!

Q. Performing live is a huge part of your identity as a band. How do you maintain that raw, energetic vibe on stage while still staying true to the sound and vision you’ve crafted in the studio?

A. By doing that in reverse! We actually go into the studio with the intention of getting it as raw and energetic as we would do live. We record as much as we can in one take, rarely allowing several takes on a particular part – purely because we want to keep what came out of us in the moment! Duke loves to do his lead parts a as whole song take, Kieron won’t overthink the vocals, and the rhythm section will generally record at the same time. We aim to not overproduce anything, so we can recreate the same sounds live on stage.

Q. As you continue to grow and release new music over the next year, what do you hope listeners take away from your songs? Is there a particular feeling or experience you want to create for them through your music?

A. Just enjoyment. We feel music is to be loved and appreciated, not judged or dismissed. If it’s not for you, no worries, skip the track! So yeah, we want our listeners to enjoy what we’ve crafted, feel the energy and the love that goes into making the songs, and realise guitar-driven rock music still has a place in everyone’s hearts!

Q. We can’t thank you enough for sharing these intimate details with us! So, what’s next for The Fever Dreams? Can you give us an inside scoop on your upcoming projects, and what should fans be excited about? We’d love for them to hear it directly from you!

A. Our next big date is Friday 10th October! Not only are we headlining the Half Moon in Putney, London… but we also bring out our second official original release, Blink Of An Eye! It’s a country / rock fusion, and the song goes on a hell of a journey. Make sure you check it out!!!

The Fever Dreams, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
