Begin Interview:
Hello Shelita, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.
Q. We were blown away by “You Will Want My Love.” The opening notes were the perfect backdrop for your amazing voice. They are so full, emotional, and commanding, with such a beautiful tone. When did you first realize the power of your voice, and what moment in your life transformed it from a personal, intimate expression to a tool for sharing your story with the world, ultimately laying the foundation for the impactful career we see today?
A: I first realized the power of my voice when I saw how it could shift the energy of a room. That shift from private expression to public storytelling laid the foundation for everything I do now.
Q. The journey you’ve described in creating "You Will Want My Love" is so profound. How did the process of freediving and reconnecting with your body influence the creative side of the album?
A: Freediving taught me presence, surrender, and trust in my body. Freediving also made me pay more attention to my breath and helped me go deeper into the depths of my being, just like my songs.
Q. Can you elaborate on how your near-fatal skydiving accident changed the way you approach both life and music? Were there particular moments or realizations that led you back to songwriting?
A: The accident forced me to slow down and strip away everything that was not essential. I was able to make music and songwrite from my hospital bed. Music became the space where I could process survival and rediscover purpose.
Q. Your album title, Into The Depths, feels so metaphorical. How do you see the depths you explore in this album, are they more emotional, physical, or something else entirely?
A: The depths are emotional, physical, and spiritual. They are about going inward to reflect, but also outward into the unknown, whether that is in the ocean or love itself. I was inspired by the Cenotes in Tulum while on a dive. Cenotes are deep, and they are portals. In the heart of the cenotes, I became weightless, as if time had paused. The best way I can describe it is, it was like a meeting with breath, with the part of me that remembers Cenotes are portals.
Q. The stillness of the ocean played a role in shaping this album. What about the ocean spoke to you, and how did it reflect the process of your recovery and transformation?
A: The ocean mirrored my recovery. Its stillness reminded me that healing is not loud or linear. It is about surrendering, listening, and finding strength in each breath. I was inspired by the many oceans I have dived in from Seychelles Islands to the Galapagos.
Q. “Sometimes you have to descend to ascend.” This phrase really struck us. Can you talk about how this philosophy is woven into your upcoming album Into the Depths?
A: It is the heart of the album. To descend is to go deep, and to ascend is to come into the light.
Q. Your collaboration with William Henshall of Londonbeat must have been special. What kind of chemistry did you find?
A: Will is a brilliant person and a brilliant writer. It was an incredible experience to work with him.
Q. The road to recovery after your skydiving accident must have been incredibly difficult. What was the most challenging part of reconnecting to your voice, both literally and figuratively?
A: I didn’t have any issues connecting to my voice. I had an issue reconnecting to my body. When you go through major trauma like having your bones hanging out of your body, it makes you have to reevaluate how you relate to your body.
Q. Your social media and national press push for You Will Want My Love has been exciting. How does sharing your personal journey with your fans through these channels feel, being so open and vulnerable in front of so many people around the world?
A: Honestly, at first I thought no one cared, and then I shared the stories behind the songs, and everything started to connect; people started reaching out to me from all over the world. Fans started sharing their own stories with me, which creates a powerful cycle of support that I didn’t know I needed. It is a humbling experience that I’ve learned so much from.
Q. Given the success you've had with NPR, Music Connection, and Forbes praising your work, how does the external recognition affect your internal creative process? Does it push you to meet outside expectations or change your work for a broader audience, or do you try to stay focused on the art itself?
A: I am grateful for recognition, but I am focused on writing songs that are timeless. I think in 1000 year time spans. Songs are immortal and will live forever. Songs are art, art that is a reflection of our universal truths of humanity, is timeless, and has no expiration.
Q. You have had the chance to work with Bellringer on this single. How do you approach collaboration?
A: Collaboration for me is organic. I bring a vision but stay open to where the energy flows. With Bellringer, there is always an effortless exchange of ideas.
Q. After such a transformative personal experience, how has your perspective on love and relationships evolved? Do you find that these themes are reflected in You Will Want My Love and other tracks on the album?
A: I see love as something to be cherished and not taken for granted. “You Will Want My Love” reflects that. Love is powerful when embraced fully.
Q. Your journey has been one of both literal and metaphorical depths. What is the most significant lesson you’ve learned during your recovery process, and how has it shaped the artist you are today?
A: I learned what love really is and what it is not. I thought I knew, but going through my recovery has really helped me love myself and given me way more confidence. I also learned who didn't love me, and that was a very hard lesson to learn. There is a huge difference between admiration and love. Everything happens the way it is supposed to and I am grateful for these beautiful lessons.
Q. And finally, we can't thank you enough for sharing these intimate details! So, what's next? Can you give us the inside scoop on your upcoming projects and what fans should be excited about? We'd love to be the first to share the news!
A: I am beyond excited to release my full album, Into the Depths, very soon. Each song explores a different facet of humanity. There will be a live tour next year. I’m in the planning stages for which countries I will be performing in.
Shelita, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
