Wait… there's more!
We had the chance to catch up with this exciting artist for an exclusive interview in "The Cage" Music Blog, where we discussed their music and got to know them better.
Here’s how it went:
Begin Interview:
Hello Shahera Sam, we’re thrilled to have you for this interview! We've thoroughly enjoyed diving into your music and exploring your work, and now we’re even more eager to discover more about you, both personally and professionally.
How long have you been making music, and how does your single “The Boy From The Band” reflect your growth as an artist?
I began my songwriting journey at about 17 or 18 years old. Before that, I mainly focused on doing covers. One day, I felt inspired to share my thoughts and feelings through my lyrics, and that’s how I created my first song. It’s been an enjoyable experience ever since! I believe “The Boy From The Band” truly showcases my development as an artist, highlighting my progress in songwriting, understanding the production process, and discovering my own unique sound.
How has your upbringing in Kuala Lumpur influenced your musical style and songwriting?
The warmth of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, definitely influences my music and songwriting. Being from Southeast Asia and raised in a tropical environment, my sound carries a sense of lightness and warmth that reflects my roots. I have a single titled “Kenapa (Why)”, which is the first Malay/English song I ever wrote and released. In this track, I aimed to embody the essence of tropical sounds, and I’m thrilled that my producers were able to bring that vision to life.
What emotion do you feel inspires your desire to start a project, especially for a song like “The Boy From The Band”?
I was definitely in a “fangirl” mood when I wrote this because, honestly, I’m the biggest fangirl out there. I grew up listening to boybands like One Direction, Backstreet Boys, and Westlife. Whenever I had a crush, I tried to express those feelings, and this time, I couldn’t stop thinking about this guy—he’s just my dream type! So, with this song, I poured out all my emotions, being real and raw without trying to make it sound too cool. I was a little nervous to share it at first because it felt like I was being super open about my feelings.
Can you describe to us the theme for the “The Boy From The Band” artwork and what was the inspiration and intention for the observer to absorb from it?
For the artwork of "The Boy From The Band," my goal was to capture the essence of the song. The boy depicted plays the bass, adding to the musical theme. I aimed for a sense of mystery, inviting viewers to ponder the identity of this "boy." Additionally, I wanted my listeners to feel a connection, allowing them to envision who their own "boy" might be.
My sister, Erin, and I captured this moment during our time in the studio recording the song. With the assistance of my producer, Sam Baisch, who also plays the bass, we chose to feature him on the cover of this single. As it was Spring, we opted to take the photographs in the garden located at the back of the studio.
What instrument do you use as the foundation to start your musical creations with?
I’ve written a ton of my songs on my Ukulele. It was the first instrument I picked up, so I feel pretty at home writing with it. Lately, I’ve been trying to learn guitar, so I occasionally whip that out for songwriting, and I dabble a bit on the piano too. But honestly, I’m still pretty amateur on those!
What instrument do you not play, or play leisurely, that you wish you could master?
I'm in the process of learning to play the guitar, but with my tiny fingers, it's a bit of a challenge, haha! I'm really hoping to get the hang of it soon. fingers crossed
Where do you start the production of your music, i.e. in a home recording studio or with an outside producer? How do you finalize your finished work, i.e. self-mixed/mastered or through another source?
I typically start writing my songs using my Ukulele or occasionally the piano. Once I have a few ideas, I team up with my producer friends in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to record some demos. After that, I reach out to other producers I admire or believe would be a great fit for the track. They handle the mixing and mastering, and just like that, the song comes to life!
How did the experience of recording “The Boy From The Band” in Stuttgart, Germany, with Sascha Scherer and Sam Baisch shape the track’s final sound?
Working with both of them was an amazing experience! I'm a huge fan of their band, Rikas, so I have no doubt they will do a fantastic job crafting the sound for my songs. For "The Boy From The Band," Sam and Sascha were incredibly helpful in shaping its sound. I mentioned my admiration for Bleachers, and while we were listening to "Tiny Moves," an idea sparked for the track. We aimed for a dreamy, coming-of-age vibe, and they both contributed to the arrangement and vocals. I focused on adding more ad-libs and harmonies to enhance the overall sound. Sascha is an excellent producer who guided me with the vocal harmonies and ad-libs, providing me with ideas to expand my vocals. Sam also did a wonderful job creating the dreamy guitar rhythm.
I had an amazing time recording in Stuttgart, Germany! The atmosphere was so relaxed, with beautiful hills all around, and since it was Spring, the weather was just perfect—not too cold and not too hot. I think it really contributed to the overall recording experience.
What role do your top influences, like Yuna and Beabadoobee, play in shaping your musical direction, especially for tracks like “The Boy From The Band”?
Yuna and Beabadoobee are major influences on my music and songwriting. Their styles are quite similar, often featuring rich harmonies and ad-libs that create a full, emotional sound. This has greatly inspired one of my tracks, "The Boy From The Band," which captures a dreamy and melancholic vibe.
How has performed at open mics and festivals like Urbanscapes contributed to your growth as an artist?
It seriously boosts my confidence when I'm up on stage, connecting with the audience and getting comfy with my stage presence! Plus, it really helps me feel more self-assured as an artist and singer-songwriter.
Was there ever a time when you emotionally felt, “I can’t do this anymore”? Can you tell us why this happened and how you found the strength to continue?
For sure, there are moments when I feel like throwing in the towel because I’m unsure about the path my music is taking. But just when I’m about to give up, I get these little signs—like my idols acknowledging me or friends dropping some encouraging words. Plus, my gut always tells me, “Just keep pushing through!” And that’s what keeps me motivated to carry on.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would say “Don’t give up because Dreams Do Come True!”
What is your favorite song to cover?
- Right now, I absolutely love covering "You’re Still The One" by Shania Twain. It's such a heartfelt song, and I always feel a wave of emotions when I sing it.
What is your favorite quote?
- One of my favorite quotes is, "What’s meant for you will find its way to you." This phrase often gives me strength during challenging moments and helps me manage my overthinking. It’s a comforting reminder that things will work out in the end.
When you reach the stage where you have the admiration and respect of other world-known artists, what band or artist would you love to call and say, “Let’s go on tour together”?
I'm a massive fan of Wallows! I've been enjoying their music since the "Spring" EP, and it's truly inspiring to see how far they've come. If I could, I would totally call them up and say, "Let's hit the road together!" Haha. Plus, they seem like such great people!
What is the most inspirational thing a fan, or anyone, has told or shown you about your music?
A friend of mine shared that they got emotional while listening to “That Day,” one of my singles. I was truly amazed to see how my music could touch someone like that. It inspires me to keep creating more music that resonates with people's hearts.
