James Laurent delivers a powerful, immersive album driven by raw emotion, a terrific vocal presentation, bold production, and undeniable presence.
We found Laugh at the Tragedy by James Laurent, and needless to say, we were super impressed and had to share just how great this album made us feel.
“Polarity’s” dynamic flow and bassy low end make for a striking opening, instantly setting the stage for James Laurent’s unique, powerful vocal delivery. The story unfolds almost immediately when we hear:
She’s a diva but I’m no better / we both agree we shouldn’t be in love but we always end up together
From these moments alone, we’re already in love with James Laurent. The honesty, and that unmistakable look-in-the-mirror moment reflecting our own lives, is chilling. I feel like the whole world will simultaneously think, yeah -I've been there. It’s a bold way for Laurent to flex early on. Next , the dark, ominous, flowing musical arrangement hits hard, pairing bold, powerful drums with a melody that refuses to let go. Production-wise, the song feels like it’s constantly growing, almost consuming not just your mind, but your physical embodiment as well. It’s an awesome, almost trippy experience with a fantastic message, perfectly designed to keep the listener locked in and fully entertained. The outro is especially thrilling, holding the moment tight with a beautifully flowing reverb that lands as a perfect final touch.
“Midas” is a clear creative win, using drops, starts, and stops alongside an up-close, personal vocal style to deliver an exhilarating, high-energy thrill ride. The vocal edits and nuanced drums make James Laurent’s vocals feel fully fused with the percussion, creating a powerful sense of momentum that makes this track an absolute standout for us. This is where we started realizing with Laurent we cannot have a favorite track because every time we hit play its a rush of excitement. "Everything I touch turns to gold" feels like lyrics that are going to be a foretelling of artists future in the music industry.
“Dancing with the Devil” is further proof this artist is no accident, no one hit wonder, and that the James Laurent's talents are indeed very real. The excited beats and fear-infusing synths feel like they’re moving all around you, creating a sense of delirium in the best possible way. Vocally, this track is seriously impressive. The long-held notes on the lyrics: “I’m dancing with the Devil,” are commanding and equally imposing, carrying an almost hypnotic weight. It’s a beautiful and striking vocal display that adds real validity to the artist’s street cred as a performer. But it doesn’t stop there. Shifting into a high-paced emotional and mental unraveling, James Laurent unleashes a hybrid rap within his emo-styled sound that feels fresh, raw, and new. His thoughts flow like a fast moving river, and the over the top pace makes you feel like you are chasing him, which creates an adrenaline like rush. It’s a powerful way to wrap up an already awesome album.
Overall, Laugh at the Tragedy by James Laurent is a massive success. Once you hear it, it’s impossible not to want to see James Laurent live. There’s no doubt the performance would be nothing short of epic.
With work this strong, it’s clear James Laurent is going places, and we’ll be watching closely to see what comes next.
