Begin Interview:
Hello Kristen Plati, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.
Q. Let’s start with your name. Did you always go by Kristen Plati as an artist, or was there ever a moment you considered a stage name? What does using your real name mean to you?
A. I love my name – it represents my family, and my heritage. When I got married, I took my husband’s name personally, but professionally I wanted to remain Kristen Plati. It’s the name I feel most myself.
Q. Your new single “Home” is incredibly heartfelt. Can you tell us the story behind the song and what inspired you to write it?
A. I am originally from Perth, Australia – but have lived in New York for 12 years. It is where I have grown up, found my voice, found my style and found a family of supporters that I am so grateful for. I became myself as an artist here. However, I always knew when I wanted to have kids and put down roots – I wanted it to be in Australia. So, on June 26th, 2025 I am moving back to Perth and leaving my friends behind. While I know it’s the best decision for us as a family, there is a huge part of me that doesn’t want to leave. So, writing “Home” was my way of sorting through those conflicting feelings of not knowing whether I will ever feel whole no matter where I end up – half of my heart will always be in New York and the other half will be in Perth. Its been a really hard couple of months coming to terms with that realization.
Q. You’ve lived in both Perth and New York City. How have those places shaped the emotional landscape of this song and your music in general?
A. Definitely! I think that New York has been a huge part of my music journey – I only started writing music after I moved here. But, I listen to so many different genres of music because of my upbringing in Perth and what my parents listened to growing up. I have been incredibly lucky to be a little more experimental in my songwriting because of New York as well – so while Home is more mainstream, I have had to opportunity to explore different genres with different producers in the city.
Q. Where do you usually write and create your music? Do you have a dedicated space, or is it more spontaneous and on the go?
A. It depends honestly – some of my songs were written over tears on a keyboard, some started as voice memos that struck while I was walking through the city, some came after hearing track ideas from producers. “Stone” was written in 15 minutes as I walked alongside a cemetery. Inspiration has struck at different times, and all of the songs have been written different ways.
Q. When it comes to songwriting and production, do you typically work alone or do you collaborate with others? Who’s been part of your creative circle lately?
A. I’ve done both – a few I wrote completely by myself on the piano. I have only co-written with Marrick Smith here in New York, and Austin Bello in Virginia. I love working with both of them – they challenge me, push me, and I am always so proud of the end results! If I am looking for beats or a more producer approach – I love working with Jevares Myrick.
Q. What does making music do for you emotionally or spiritually? How would you describe the feeling when you're in the creative zone?
A. I don’t think that I know how to do anything else. I started singing lessons when I was 5, so it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. I genuinely don’t think I would be who I am today without music. It has shaped me as a person, it has made me stronger, more vulnerable and more open. Songwriting has allowed me to work through complex emotions in a healing and creative way. There is no better feeling than sitting at that piano feeling lost or heartbroken, and playing and singing about it until you’ve worked through how you feel.
Q. Have you ever had a moment where you felt overwhelmed or discouraged, maybe even thought about giving up music? What helped you keep going?
A. All the time, honestly. I am so proud of the music I make, and it always seems to be well received – but it’s hard to continue to put out music and not have it be a successful as you believe it could be, or should be. I was always bullied because of my weight, so growing up I always felt like if I could sing well, I could prove that I deserved friendship, or love, or the attention I wasn’t getting in the real world. I was chasing fame to prove all of those people wrong. Now, I don’t want fame – I just want people to listen to my music and feel something. Hopefully make people feel like they aren’t alone in their heartache, confusion, struggles or wins!
Q. Outside of music, who or what has had the biggest influence on your personal growth or artistic perspective?
A. Style – I think once I started writing my own music and found my own voice, I started to gain confidence and that in turn reflected in my music. That has allowed me to feel confident enough to also explore different genres and music styles. It also has allowed me to embrace my body and own my size.
Q. What does it feel like to perform “Home” live? Is it cathartic, nerve-wracking, or something else entirely when you share something so personal on stage?
A. I’ve only been able to perform it live once – but it was at my going away show so the song made an already emotional night that much harder. There were definitely tears but we made it through the song and the rest of the show!
Q. What are your dream venues? Name the top 3 stages or locations you hope to perform at in your career.
A. Royal Albert Hall, MSG and the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Q. What’s something fun or unexpected about you that fans might not know? Any quirky habits, pre-show rituals, or surprising hobbies?
A. I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone who follows me or knows me – but reading. I love reading – I could probably read 24 hours a day if I had nothing else to do.
Q. Coming from Perth, what was your experience like in the local music scene there, and how does it compare to New York City? What’s your vision for how far this track could go?
A. I was 19 and into musical theatre when I left – so I wasn’t in touch with the music scene very much! But I went to WAAPA and so a lot of my friends are in the music scene out there and it really is thriving. Theres a lot of great artists in Perth, and there is live music almost every night!
Q. What do you want people to remember most about you after hearing “Home” and reading this interview?
A. I just hope that people who have been displaced, or are far from home or loved ones knows that they aren’t alone – that it’s normal to feel incomplete and that it’s ok to feel lost. There is no right answer to “where is home?”… It’s hard, it’s confusing, it’s scary – but just do what makes you happy. Nothing is forever, and you can always change your mind and go home.
Q. And finally, what’s next? Can you share anything about your upcoming music or creative direction for the future?
A. I have 3 new songs in the pipeline ready for release later this year. The next one – “Act Tough” is a really fun one about owning your space and taking charge of what you want! I’m really excited about it’s release – I think it will be well received! Then for me personally, it’s going to be a lot of settling in, finding my way in a new city and hopefully starting a family!
Kristen Plati, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
