“When Alone” captures Matare at a career high point, wrapped in shimmering textures and anchored by a truly impressive intimate vocal performance.

Matare continues to impress and make his mark on the indie music scene, and with this release, his artistic voice comes through with even more confidence and clarity. There is a unique approach to his sound, one that we feel keeps us coming back and enjoying his music on repeat. This is the core of his sound that we appreciate so much. Matare knows how to create music that feels lived in, where every layer serves the emotion.”

“When Alone” opens with a gentle yet forward-moving rhythm that immediately sets the tone, carried by beautifully tight drum work and a soft haze that gives the track its underground new wave glow. Following that is a vocal performance that stands as one of Matare’s most compelling to date, both restrained and powerful. This careful balance between clarity and volume is delivered in a way that allows you to absorb the lyrical message while still being able to fully enjoy its musical foundation. His longer held notes really impressed as they floated effortlessly across the track, producing a weightless quality that felt very intimate, and this vocal distinction truly makes this a standout performance we really enjoyed.

We felt lines like:

“Yet in my mind / it stays the same”

land with quiet power because they invoke thought without overanalyzing and pulling from the songs energy, but still feels reflective and meditative, creating a sense of suspension where the listener can choose to sink into the moment. We also liked the production technique where the vocal delivery seems to hover just above the instrumentation, giving the song a cinematic quality that feels almost dreamlike. There is a natural connection formed here, one that bridges the artist’s inner world with the listener’s own experience.

The drumming is tight and expressive, with fills that add brightness to the flow, while the rises and drops add a dynamic feeling. Amongst this, the guitars shimmer and stretch outward, jangly yet warm, creating a glowing backdrop that carries the track forward. The combination of these elements creates those “special sauce” moments that make a good track great. All the layers and moments in “When Alone” brighten the flow and harness the listener’s attention at just the right moments.

What we loved about Matare in this release is his ability to merge emotion, restraint, atmosphere, and melody into a sound that feels honest, immersive, and unmistakably his own, all while creating a connection that develops strongly with the listener.

“When Alone” by Matare is hands down our favorite release of his to date, packed with evocative textures, cinematic depth, and a weightless emotional pull that makes it impossible to ignore. It is a track that rewards repeat listens, revealing new details each time while maintaining its calm, meditative core. This release captures Matare at his most focused and expressive which will undoubtedly increase his fan base exponentially.
