For almost a decade, HUNNY has been the soundtrack to heartbreaks, crushes, late-night drives and chaotic road trips up the California coast. Their mix of indie-pop sparkle, post-punk edge, and undeniable charm has kept fans hooked, and now they’re officially stepping into a new chapter. Their latest single “sidewaze” just dropped, and spoiler: it’s a bop.
“sidewaze” is HUNNY’s first release since their 2023 album New Planet Heaven and its 2024 live version, and it brings all the bright, punchy energy we’ve come to expect. The track blends plucky guitar riffs, synthy highs, and just the right amount of fuzzed-out distortion. It’s playful, a little messy, and definitely relatable in that “was this text a red flag or just flirty” kind of way.
Frontman Jason Yarger explained that the song actually grew from an idea that didn’t make it onto New Planet Heaven.“The main synth line was originally written for the last chorus of ‘kick ur teeth in’, but I decided it was too much for the album version. We kept it in the live shows just for fun. If you listen to the ‘Live at Paul’s’ version, you’ll catch it. Right before a tour, I thought, what if that part kept going and became a new song? So I wrote ‘sidewaze’ from that moment. It turned into a fun little track about two people messing with each other. The line about getting the wrong address? Feels like something straight out of my high school years.”
A Big Shift: HUNNY Becomes a Solo Project
Here’s the real tea. HUNNY is now officially a solo project. After more than ten years, two full-length albums, multiple EPs, and countless shows, the band’s lineup is changing. Founding member and lead vocalist Jason Yarger is continuing HUNNY on his own while the other members step back to focus on life outside the band.
The announcement came through a heartfelt Instagram post, and it’s clear there’s nothing but love between the original members. Jason shared,“I figured I’d be starting a solo career, but my three friends told me to keep building on what we’ve created. We’ve found such a loving community, and I’m blessed that I don’t have to leave it behind. Almost twelve years ago, I wrote some shitty songs and asked my friends to play them with me, and it became something so much more than I ever thought it could. Now it’s come full circle. I’ll actually straight up die before I stop making and playing music for whoever keeps showing up and listening.”
The Legacy and the Live Magic
We’ve seen HUNNY live, and no exaggeration, their shows are insane and fantastic. It’s the kind of experience where you're singing at the top of your lungs one second and turning to your friend like “are you seeing this right now” the next. The way they interact with the crowd, the energy, the chaos, the fun of it all, it’s absolutely addictive.
And Jason? Easily one of the most fun frontmen we’ve ever seen. He brings this wild, magnetic energy that makes every show feel both massive and personal. Whether he’s diving into the crowd or hyping up a breakdown, he knows exactly how to keep everyone locked in.
What’s always made HUNNY special is how they’ve never stuck to one sound. From the dreamy indie of their 2015 breakout Pain / Ache / Loving to the more angular and gritty tones of New Planet Heaven, they’ve always played with genre in a way that feels effortless. Even as the band evolves, that mix of new wave shimmer, shoegaze gloom, and sunny West Coast attitude still feels completely their own.
Yes, we’re sad to see the original lineup part ways. But we’re also really excited. Jason continuing under the HUNNY name means this isn’t an ending. It’s just the next version of something fans have loved for years. And if “sidewaze” is where we’re starting, this next phase is going to be really, really good.
Keep an eye out for more music, upcoming tour dates, and a final show with the full original crew. We’ll be there, screaming every word.
