We had the pleasure of diving into S1ms’s latest release, “GIRLTRAP,” and we must say, it’s a masterclass in sonic craftsmanship, showcasing the artist’s exceptional ability to create something truly immersive. While we’ve highlighted a few standout tracks, we highly recommend experiencing the entire Album release for the full effect.
Our journey began with the opening track, “CLOSER,” which immediately captivates with a striking cymbal intro, ethereal synths, and resonant piano chords that set the stage for the vocals. The vocals emerge in a way that is both muted and intense, a dynamic contrast that immediately draws the listener in. S1ms’s meticulous production blends a commanding yet intricate beat with delicate vocal automation, creating an enchanting atmosphere. A breathy, almost plaintive cry intertwines with synth harmonies that swell with emotion, leaving the listener mesmerized.
The track seamlessly transitions between tight, melodic beats and a full-bodied bass ensemble, punctuated by dynamic fills that create a tantalizing push and pull. When the vocals reach their peak, they align perfectly with the powerful instrumentation before dissolving into a delicate interlude, where a glockenspiel-like backdrop provides a delightful auditory treat. The layering of beats is masterfully executed, making this song feel like a symphony of sound. A momentary drop with an almost reversed effect produces a dizzying, intoxicating sensation, while the melodic and sustained “du du da du da” is nothing short of spellbinding. You will absolutely lose yourself in this track!
Next up is “WASTE AWAY,” which instantly injects a sense of urgency, evoking the feeling of running or taking flight. This track pulses with raw energy, inducing a visceral need to move. A rhythmic vibration courses through both the musical arrangement and vocal delivery, amplifying the tension and intensity. The vocalist’s performance conveys frustration and emotional release, making every lyric hit with impact. S1ms’s delivery is both sustained and rapid-fire, particularly in the lines:
“I can’t take this animal / you deserve yourself / I won’t lose no time or sleep / your actions will be felt.”
The message is crystal clear, this is a song of catharsis, of shedding emotional weight. As the song builds, a more commanding beat emerges, accompanied by reverberating snippets that escalate into an exhilarating, rapid-fire crescendo. When the bass drops, the result is nothing short of electrifying. The beats and bass are masterfully engineered to feel both groundbreaking and intensely fresh. S1ms’s automation and technical production push the genre forward, delivering a track that feels utterly unique. By the time the interlude hits, the beat has become an addiction, leaving us yearning for its return. This is undoubtedly a standout moment on the album.
The final track, “SLEEPYTIME,” delivers an irresistibly captivating rhythm from the very first beat. The percussion is both powerful and expansive, with a deep, reverberating punch that demands attention. The bass, reminiscent of a live drum performance, is executed brilliantly. Hypnotic synths swirl around the listener, creating a fully immersive experience, and before we know it, we’re completely hooked. This might just be our favorite track of the release.
The dynamic use of synths, which seem to fly in from all directions, ignites an instinctive urge to hit the dance floor with hands in the air. As the bass grows more thunderous, the sheer force of the sound threatens to shake your over-ear headphones right off your head. The incorporation of a stop-beat technique is a stroke of genius, adding an unpredictable, electrifying twist. When the vocals arrive, they integrate seamlessly with the track’s pulsating energy, complemented by crisp finger snaps that enhance the groove. Without a doubt, you’re going to fall in love with S1ms after hearing this.
S1ms, a solo artist originally from Morrison, Colorado, now based in Denver, is classically trained in both piano and drums. Transitioning to music production at the age of 15, S1ms has mastered the art of blending analog and digital synthesizers using Ableton 12 Suite, crafting a distinct sound characterized by dynamic mixes and layered vocals. Handling every aspect from composition to mastering, S1ms continues to push the boundaries of electronic music with meticulous attention to detail and an innovative approach to production.
