Prepare to lose yourself in the haunting beauty of “Joseph,” the latest track from the enigmatic Genevieve. With a voice that seems to carry the weight of the world and a sound that pulls from deep emotional wells, this song is not just a listen; it's an experience. And we’re here to take you inside the mind of the artist who created it.
We spoke with Genevieve about this deeply personal journey, where grief and healing intertwine. From the powerful opening notes to the vulnerable moments where the music seems to breathe with life, “Joseph” is more than just a song; it's a window into the soul. What does it mean to lose someone? How does it feel to watch someone you love fade, and what’s left when they do? Genevieve pulls from these questions and paints a picture with sound that is as cathartic as it is beautiful.
But “Joseph” isn't just about grief; it’s a love letter to the past, a conversation with the sea, and a tribute to the artists who dared to be themselves. Genevieve’s musical journey, shaped by the legends of the ‘70s and ‘80s, flows through this track, mixing personal stories with universal truths. It's an invitation to sit with your emotions and find beauty in the rawest of feelings. And just as the song carries an energy of its own, the environment where it was recorded, by the sea in Hove, became part of its soundscape, infusing it with a quiet, natural power.
So, what does “Joseph” leave behind? A lingering ache, an open heart, and a sense of freedom.

Begin Interview:
Hello Genevieve, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.
Q. The opening notes of “Joseph” are stunning. The dynamic movement of music and energy is palpable. The flow of the music creates such a striking emotional moment. But what has stood out the most is how your vocals created this magic. Your tone and flow are incredible, leaving us in awe. After experiencing that, we’re curious, what has your personal musical journey been like? Did you evolve gradually into your professional career, or was there a specific moment or event that sparked it all?
A. My musical journey has been a colourful adventure, exploring different styles, but I always keep coming back to the ‘70s and ‘80s. That era broke my heart in the best way—artists like David Bowie completely living in themselves, fearless and unapologetically authentic, showed me what music could really be. My dad introduced me to the likes of Van Morrison, and albums like Astral Weeks definitely shaped my sound and how I connect to music emotionally. Experiencing all of this inspired me to follow my own path, and over time, that love for music and self-expression naturally evolved into a career where I could create, share, and help others feel that same sense of freedom through sound.
Q. “Joseph” is obviously a deeply personal journey for you. Can you walk us through the heart of this song? What’s the soul of it, the thing that really moved you to create it?
A. Joseph is a deeply personal journey about grief and the sudden, often unexpected shifts in the people we love. While creating it, I was carrying the constant grief for my father—the man he had become, so different from who he once was—which made the process both challenging and cathartic.
Q. Why “Joseph”? That name feels so powerful, like it holds a story of its own. What’s the significance behind choosing that title for this track?
A. There was something resonant about that name. When I finished writing the song, Joseph just called to me—it felt like the only title that truly fit. Sometimes names arrive with their own weight and mystery, and this one carried the spirit of the track in a way I couldn’t ignore.
Q. Grief is a weighty, complex emotion to capture in music. How did you find a way to let it unfold naturally in “Joseph” without it feeling overwhelming or too heavy?
A. Grief is such a weighty and complex emotion, and for Joseph, I found the key was to focus on the moment and immerse myself fully in the music. By staying in that flow state, I could let the emotions unfold naturally without becoming overwhelming. It wasn’t about forcing the feeling into the song—it was about being present with it, letting the music carry the grief, and allowing the vulnerability to translate into something honest and moving for listeners.
Q. Is this particular musical genre style something you’ve always embraced from the very beginning of your journey, or has it evolved over time from influences or experimentation with other genres you explored earlier?
A. I’ve never been one to fit into a box. My music flows where the emotion takes me, drifting between sounds and styles, following the currents of feeling. Each song becomes its own world, shaped by whatever moves me in that moment.
Q. Recording by the sea in Hove sounds magical. How did that environment—the wind, the sea, the garden, affect the way you heard or created the sound of “Joseph”?
A. Recording Joseph by the sea in Hove felt like stepping into another world. Surrounded by the wind, the waves, and the quiet of the garden, I felt completely grounded—nature became part of the music. In that space, the song flowed through me effortlessly, as if the environment itself was shaping its sound and emotion, allowing the grief and beauty of the piece to breathe naturally.
Q. Do you find that your most vulnerable experiences often translate into your strongest songs? Do you share your most intimate feelings, or do you prefer to keep certain parts of your story more private and let the listener derive their own meaning?
A. Absolutely. I’ve found that the more vulnerable I allow myself to be, the stronger the songs become. Sharing experiences gives them a chance to shift the narrative, transforming grief or emotion into something that can truly resonate. At the same time, I leave space for listeners to find their own meaning—balancing honesty with universality so the song carries both my story and theirs.
Q. Your father’s connection to flowers and the sea feels like it weaves itself into this track. How did you channel that essence into the music? What part of “Joseph” carries his spirit?
A. My father’s presence flows through every track on EP Blue Moon. As one of my biggest champions, the energy he carried through music stayed with me—whenever he would sing, there was a fire in his heart, even in the last years of his life. Joseph carries a piece of that fire, his passion and belief, and it’s something I feel guiding me every time I create.
Q. Your collaboration with your friend and jazz partner sounds so intuitive. Was there a specific moment when you felt like the music shifted, as if their energy breathed new life into the song?
A. I feel that with Jonjo, we truly hear each other, and there’s an unbreakable energy between us that will never fade. I love how he paints each individual track a different colour, yet they all come together to create a seamless, unified thread. That combination of connection and storytelling through sound brings Joseph to life in a way that feels completely alive.
Q. Memory plays such a big role in this track. If “Joseph” were to become a memory itself, how would you want listeners to carry it with them? What imprint do you want it to leave?
A. I’d want listeners to leave with the sense that the people we love continue to live on in our memories and in the special moments we’ve shared with them. I’d also want them to feel the ache, because embracing that vulnerability is what truly opens the heart and lets the song resonate.
Q. When you write songs, are you typically drawing from your own life and experiences, or do you sometimes dive into completely fictional worlds? What’s your relationship to the stories and characters in your music?
A. When I write, there are no rules. Sometimes the songs come from my own life, and other times they simply appear—melodies and words flowing through me, as if the music itself is telling the story. The characters and moments exist somewhere in between, part imagination, part lived experience, guiding the song in their own way.
Q. You’ve talked about this track having the feeling of a journey, like driving down an open road. If you could see “Joseph” as a visual landscape, this feels so bold and groundbreaking, what does it look like to you? What kind of world are you inviting us into?
A. I am inviting listeners into a dreamland that feels hazy, where the unknown unfolds and anything could happen next.
Q. When you write a song, do you feel more like you’re chasing something, or are you letting go of something important that feels like it could change your life?
A. When I write, it feels less like chasing something and more like uncovering it. The process helps me make sense of how I’m feeling and opens up parts of my soul that I didn’t know existed before.
Q. Now that “Joseph” is finished, what part of yourself do you feel you’ve uncovered through creating it? Is there something you’ve discovered about your own artistic process or emotional world that you didn’t know before?
A. Through creating Joseph, I discovered that when I fully allow myself to feel, the song doesn’t need to be forced—it simply pours out. It taught me that my truest work comes from surrendering to emotion, and in that space, I uncovered parts of myself I hadn’t known were there.
Q. Genevieve, we can’t thank you enough for sharing these intimate details. So, what’s next? Can you give us the inside scoop on your upcoming projects and what fans should be excited about? We’d love the readers to hear the news directly from you!
A. This is just the beginning—it’s all part of my upcoming EP, Blue Moon. On November 7th, my next track, Girls, drops, so keep your eyes and ears wide open—it’s got a little bite to it. There’s plenty more where that came from, and I can’t wait for you to hear it all.
Genevieve, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
