“Eroded Reef (Radio Edit)” by Eternal Mourning stood out by immediately jumping into frame and capturing the essence of the moment, creating intrigue and excitement for the listener. The song’s confidence and command also quickly lull you into submission. What I felt made it so exciting was that the melody is intentionally restrained in a way that could almost be considered passive, and that duality is incredibly powerful. Two forces, one commanding and one passive, acting at the same time and combining in a way that felt quite tantalizing. All of this happened so quickly, literally within the opening moments. As the song moved forward, its continuous stream of notes and style never let go, and you actually didn’t want it to.
What also landed as something very different was the parallel movement between the musical arrangement and the singer’s delivery. With calculated precision, Philippe Mourani builds a wall of sound. The most impressive quality is his long, soaring presentation, yet he carries remarkable clarity. Every note and every breath were totally locked in sync with the song’s movement. It was very impressive, and we loved how, by shirking any standard or common delivery, Philippe Mourani tantalized the spirit of the audience with his unique and authentic lyrical style. Additionally, there is an engineering technique that layers the vocals and makes them feel like multiple voices sharing one lane. Unlike a standard gang delivery, this felt haunting, otherworldly, and exhilarating.
The musical arrangement was also extremely well performed. The forceful, driving beats provided a formidable foundation that set the flow while allowing the music to radiate alongside the captivating vocals. The intricate drum fills were very exciting, and I loved the reflective and almost lonely tone of the guitars and the vivid imagery they created. The bass guitar was also extremely noteworthy, carrying a mesmerizing rhythm with a controlled yet cascading momentum while pulsating like a slow heartbeat. It was a true standout element of the song.
