We checked out the latest release, “Watchtower” by FREE / MAN, and found it to be a terrific listen. It has a beautiful Americana foundation and combines melodic storytelling with a smooth pleasant rhythm.
We decided to make this a video review and watched The Official Music Video, available on YouTube. It really complemented the song with the serene visuals of snowy plains and tranquil forests. The imagery set a nice soothing and calming tone that helped you connect with the message of the song. The acoustic guitars presented themselves with a gentle yet firm presence. The drums were punchy but not overpowering creating a nice balance.
Then, as the harmonica gracefully weaves into the mix, it was very surprising but actually felt as if they were never not present in the song. It was a very nice touch and ingeniously delivered. When FREE / MAN’s vocals enter, they are bold and exude a confidence steeped in authentic and nostalgic rock and roll tone. The delivery of the lyrics, particularly the part “and it’s all gone wrong again,” is utterly unique, and felt like a Christopher Walken moment, where you think you would love to be able to sing that way, but could never deliver the cadence with such confidence and uniqueness.
The vocal performance throughout continues to be distinct and original. The layered harmonies elevate the song even further. The drum fills blend seamlessly into an intricate and stunning acoustic guitar solo, featuring a hint of Spanish guitar flair. The ending provides a really nice interlude acapella vocal display that we also really enjoyed.
The engineering of “Watchtower” was well done with a nice balance of all the instruments giving a clear and bright display. The vocals are clear and brightly laid and were properly displayed as the forefront of the performance.
Thankfully, the song avoids the trap of over-engineering. Instead, it preserved the roots of rock and roll texture that is the foundation of one of the most prominent genres of all history.
Overall, “Watchtower” is an exceptional listening experience that combines nostalgic Americana with contemporary rock. FREE / MAN delivers a performance that is distinctive and memorable, creating a standout final result.
