Lafayette, Louisiana based 4-piece Cashier are gearing up for alt rock greatness with the release of “The Weight”, the last single off their just released debut EP.

The track, which is the namesake of the band’s release, feels like a gathering of loose ends, unpacking complex feelings about time passing and not knowing quite where you stand in the world.

The song hits you nearly immediately with a wave of droning, distorted guitars that feel as if they envelop you in a sticky warmth.

Frontwoman Kylie Gaspard’s vocals layer over the fuzzy guitar lines beautifully, as she sings about craving connection to others, seen in the track’s opening line “Pull the string that makes me want to stay”.

As the chorus comes in, the “weight” of the song hits as it pulls you further and further into its depths as Gaspard sings titular lyrics.

“I feel the weight now of falling out of line, And it feels the same now as calling out”.

Listening to the track feels like an intimate glimpse into a moment of catharsis for the band, with the soaring guitars swelling in your ears combining with the band’s laments on what it means to be alive in the modern age.

Gaspard has been clear that Cashier wear their various sources of inspiration on their sleeve, saying the band “wanted to create something that honored the influences that came before (them)”.

“While staying true to having the guitar as the focal point, the lyrics make this a coming-of-age piece, trying to find where we fit in this life, and how we long for connection”, She said.

“The Weight” was the first song written for the project, and leans more into the band’s slower, shoegaze influences than other tracks released from the EP so far.

The lead single “Part of Me” and follow-up “Like I Do” are more upbeat tracks, with slightly less of a blur of distortion and more reminiscent of grunge and alternative rock.

Having cut their teeth in the Louisiana DIY scene, Cashier are soaring to new heights, having opened for alt rock legends Dinosaur Jr and Whirr as well as garnering praise from various music publications plus a shout-out from New York indie favorites Water From Your Eyes.

The song may fade out with a heavily distorted strum, but Cashier show no signs of fading out anytime soon, with them set to celebrate the release of The Weight EP with a run of thirteen shows at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas.

Cashier’s debut EP The Weight was released on March 13th via Julia’s War Recordings.
