Excerpt An irresistible, sun-drenched triumph—“Summer Suit” bursts with charisma, color, and pure pop brlliance.

Alex Kate is turning up the heat with her new single “Summer Suit”—but don’t expect your typical seasonal anthem.

This track doesn’t just flirt with summer vibes, it owns them. It’s bold. It’s cheeky. It makes you want to dance barefoot, take the long way home, or text that person you probably shouldn’t. Behind it all is a UK artist with a gift for wrapping wit, warmth, and realness into songs that stick with you.

She’s been quietly rising, blending genres and moments into something magnetic. Now, with a dream team of collaborators who’ve shaped global chart-toppers, Alex is stepping into her next chapter, and she’s doing it with style, sparkle, and just the right amount of mischief.

We sat down with her to talk about the story behind “Summer Suit,” creative sparks, summer playlists, and what’s coming next.

We got together with Alex Kate for an exciting interview to delve into the stories and happenings behind the making of this and learn more about the artist in "The Cage" Music Blog and we are excited to share it with you!

Here’s how it went:

Begin Interview:

Hello Alex Kate, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more intrigued to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.

Q. For the fans meeting you for the first time, is Alex Kate your given name or a stage name? What inspired you to choose that for your artist persona?

A. Alex is my real first name, and I chose to use my middle name, Kate, as my last name because it had a certain snap to it. Interestingly, a few journalists have said that some of my songs remind them of Kate Bush-who’s a huge inspiration for me-so it’s a fun coincidence to share her name. I'm also fascinated by the meanings behind names. Alex means "protector" and Kate means "purity." In a world that often hypersexualizes women, I want to embrace femininity in a way that’s playful but also empowering. I want to be someone younger generations can look up to.

Q. Your vocals on “Summer Suit” are so upbeat and literally feel like a sun shining on a warm summer day. When did you start singing, and was there ever a moment you knew this was going to be your path professionally?

A. I sang a lot growing up and was originally headed to conservatoire to train as an opera singer after completing all my grades. But I lost my confidence and stopped singing for a while. During lockdown, I had a bit of a wake-up moment. I realized I’d been living vicariously through my dreams instead of living them out. That’s when I decided to go for it. Quitting a stable job to become a singer might sound mad to some people, but we only get one shot at life. Since starting my music career in 2020, I’ve released four EPs- and “Summer Suit” is the first single from my debut album. I feel most alive when I sing.

Q. “Summer Suit” feels like a celebration of being totally yourself. Can you tell us about the moment the phrase “summer suits you, summer suits us, summer suits on” clicked for you and why it stuck?

A. That line actually came really naturally before a writing session with Mitch and Ivey. “Get your summer suit on” just felt right. To me, a summer suit can be anything-Hawaiian shirt, floaty dress, linen two-piece… whatever makes you feel like summer. I’ve even been interviewing people around London about their own “summer suits,” and the answers are wonderfully diverse.

Q. The song’s message is so open. It feels like it invites everyone to show up exactly as they are. Why was that inclusivity important to you, especially in a feel-good summer anthem?

A. It means everything to me. I know what it feels like to hide parts of yourself out of fear, and I know others do too. That’s why I love Marianne Williamson’s poem Our Deepest Fear- it really speaks to this idea that we’re afraid of how powerful we actually are. We were all born to shine. There’s enough space in the world for everyone to be themselves, fully and unapologetically. And when we allow ourselves to do that, we give others permission to do the same.

Q. Your team includes some major talent. Mitch Parks has worked with Ed Sheeran and Lennon Stella, which is huge. How did those collaborations come about, and what was it like working alongside such powerhouses?

A. Mitch is incredible. My bassist, Simon, is an old friend of his and introduced us while Mitch was touring with Ed Sheeran last summer and staying in London between shows. We had a writing session and ended up writing two songs in one day- it just clicked. I later went out to Nashville to record the first half of my album, and Mitch came to London to finish the rest. I’ve worked with some seriously talented people on this project and feel so lucky and grateful.

Q. Does your boyfriend get some credit for this track? Just kidding—but seriously, can you tell us the full story behind how that simple suggestion, “Why don’t you write a summer song?” turned into this whole vibe?

A. Honestly, he does deserve a bit of credit! A couple of days before I was set to record at London’s iconic Konk Studios, I told him I felt like something was missing. He casually said, “Why don’t you write a summer song?” I was also talking about how people always say South Africa suits me-I film all my videos there because I have family there-and suddenly it clicked: “Summer suits me, summer suits you, summer suits everyone… get your summer suit on!” I took that into the writing session with Mitch and Ivey, and the song was born. I love turning an idea into something tangible-“summer suit” wasn’t a real term before, but maybe now it will catch on.

Q. For fans just discovering you through this single, what’s something about you they might be surprised to learn?

A. I once almost became an opera singer! And I’m also really into psychology and theology-I love deep conversations just as much as I love making music.

Q. Every artist hits a few walls along the way. Have there been times you questioned continuing with music? What helped you stay committed to your path?

A. All the time. This industry is tough-artists are often the first to pay out and the last to get paid. I’ve done sold-out gigs and still walked away with a loss. When you’re independent like me, you wear so many hats. In June 2023, the stress caught up with me-I got really unwell while organizing a micro-festival and juggling multiple jobs. That was a turning point. I shifted my mindset from “I have to do this” to “Wow, I get to do this.” That sense of gratitude has been a game changer for me.

Q. Do you have a favourite song from your early years-one you'd love to cover in the studio because it still feels deeply connected to who you are today?

A. Yes! “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac is timeless for me. And “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush is always a powerful one to perform. I’m actually looking to add more covers to my set, so if you have any suggestions, send them my way!

Q. Your songs often blend genres and everyday moments. How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before but needs a reason to hit ‘play’?

A. I’d say I’m a dramatic pop artist-sometimes orchestral soundtrack leaning like on my last EP, sometimes more synth-led like in “Summer Suit.” This single is whimsical and light, but the rest of my upcoming album dives into deeper themes: breaking free from fear, shame, heartbreak, mental health, justice. I want my songs to feel like a cathartic hug, or sometimes a much-needed lift.

Q. You have this great mix of warmth and wit in your writing. Do you find songwriting to be more like storytelling or more like therapy, or something else entirely?

A. For me, songwriting is emotion-led. The lyrics often come quickly, but I spend months crafting the production and arrangement. It’s definitely part therapy, part storytelling-but mostly it’s about expressing a feeling in the most honest way possible. It’s been amazing working with others on this album, too. Collaborating brings out ideas I wouldn’t have reached on my own. What’s beautiful is that different songs connect with different people-and I love that.

Q. What’s your own version of a ‘summer suit’? Hawaiian shirt, bikini, mankini—what says you in the sunshine?

A. Love this question! I never go anywhere in summer without a swimsuit and a floaty dress in the back of my car. And I’m definitely a barefoot girl-if I’m in the countryside, my shoes are off.

Q. If “Summer Suit” had a music video that captured the wildest summer day imaginable with zero budget limits, what would we see? Paint us the scene.

A. Well, good news-it does have a music video! It’s out July 4th. I shot it in South Africa, and it’s pop art meets summer party. Think bold, bright, playful-a total celebration of sunshine and self-expression.

Q. Let’s say we build a summer playlist around “Summer Suit.” What three other tracks absolutely need to be on it, and why?

A. I’d go with a Sabrina Carpenter song for her infectious energy, something from Benson Boone for that emotional depth, and a Haim track because they’re the queens of summer road trip vibes.

Q. We can't thank you enough for sharing these intimate details! So, what's next? Can you give us the inside scoop on your upcoming projects and what fans should be excited about? We'd love to be the first to share the news!

A. I’ve got eight more songs coming out over the next six months-so lots of new music on the way! I’m playing live in London on June 24th and in Bristol on July 16th. And I’d love to play in the US soon. Stay tuned!

Alex Kate, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
